THE POOL

We have a really great outdoor swimming pool near us that we try to go to as often as we can. It was in a really bad state for many years but a few years ago they did an amazing restoration of the whole thing and now it's really good.

They also had a fantastic exhibition of photographs there last year, called WET+DRY showing the photographer's, Madeleine Waller, fellow swimmers in and out of their swimming gear.
I have to also add that all the staff are very friendly, and although the comic is real, I think this was probably a case of early-morning-no-coffee-syndrome. Entertaining nevertheless.

THE SLEEP TALK

I never really realised how much I sleep talk. And there is some quite entertaining acting that goes with it too. Sometimes it is just a bit too much for poor Jacqui. It doesn't happen every night but quite often she gets woken up by a seemingly awake and very insistent me, who tries to convince her that something is happening. Here is a selection of some recent events.

On our trip to Australia we managed to get down to Tasmania, which turned out to be the most amazing place, with great food, cosy little villages filled with arts and craft people wearing felted hats in various shades of purple and also the home of MONA, the amazing art museum that I can not recommend enough if you happen to be anywhere near those parts of the world.

I had been talking about how much I wanted to see some kangaroos and koalas, so when we heard about Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary we decided to go and have a look. It was even better than expected.

Here is a snapshot of our current visit in Sydney featuring Jacqui's parents. Naturally, I was a bit nervous before meeting them, but as they are such nice people and have made me feel so welcome in their home I had nothing to fear. However, situations like the one described below will always come up at some point. So watch this space as I'm sure there will be more embarrassing moments worthy of being captured in black and white.

THE ACCOMODATION

Last weekend we drove for 2 days south from Sydney. We stopped halfway in Canberra and went for a visit to parliament and got a sneak peak of the Australian Question Time. One of the ladies of the opposition got expelled for 1.5 hours for insulting the Speaker and there was general shouting and booing every now and again. Entertaining. Then we went on to Melbourne and the house of a friend of Jacqui's from her student days in Paris.

We are currently in Australia, and together with New Zealand there is no better coffee-making people in the world, so one of the first things I did when we landed was to find a good coffee place to sample the goods. I also met some of the locals.

So the infamous eye infection has changed its tune, and has turned into a version that makes it pretty scary waking up in the morning next to a creepy looking red-eyed monster.

Jacqui woke up the other day looking like a zombie who had befriended 'The Blob' from the film with the same name starring a young Steve McQueen. It turned out to be an eye infection (conjunctivitis) and it's a nasty one. Good timing as it is Halloween.

I love saturday mornings. We usally go down the market to pick up some delicious Bahn Mi (vietnamese baguette) from the girls down the road at Bahn Mi 11, but this morning we decided to have a chilled out breakfast at home.

This is a snapshot from a recent trip to India. We went to Goa and drove around on a scooter. It was such a great way to get around and to see the area up close. Sometimes a little bit too up close.

JEEVES THE COCKTAIL CAB

The other day was 'first thursday', which is when loads of galleries on Vyner Street in East London are open for private views. Our friend Tim Stevens had an exhibition with his paintings in his studio. We had been talking for ages about doing a pop up cocktail bar, so we entertained to crowds by serving cocktails from our black cab Jeeves parked in the yard.

We themed the cocktails to Tim's paintings, which are all about coast lines and rivers. They were all really good, but the winner was definitely the Thames.

I made a little menu with some illustrations to put up and hand out as flyers.

Here we are serving our cocktails from Jeeves the Black Cab, or Jeeves the Cocktail Cab as he was for the evening. We found some great navy army dresses in a great army surplus shop in my hometown of Umeå, Sweden, and thought they would do well for the occasion.

THE FAST

We had been talking for ages about doing a fasting or detox. I'm not sure how we started talking about it, but my mum and dad used to do it when I was a kid. We have all these pictures in the photo albums of them pulling horrified faces whilst drinking unspeakable vegetable juices in order to detox themselves. But this was in the early 80's in Sweden which was in the firm grip of the Green Wave, so I'm sure no one bat an eyelid. When we told our friends what we were doing we had mixed responses, from morbid fascination to blank glazing over of the eyes.

We went for 7 days only drinking juices and the dreaded potato water and herbal teas. It should be called Slowing, not Fasting. We spent the first two days alternating between euphoric happiness and wanting to bite each others heads off, but then it became quite easy and by the end of it we were really happy that we did it and we actually felt very healthy in a way I don't think I've felt since I was a kid. But I wouldn't recommend doing it more than once a year. It's too hard on your friends.

We spent one month in New York during May this year, and this is from a visit to a vintage shop at Lower East Side. We got slightly distracted by the shop keeper as we were browsing the garments.

WILLIAMSBURG

I normally draw everything by hand and sometimes (but rarely) do the odd tweak after on the computer, but this time I did some scribbles using a drawing tablet. As you can see it is not my finest work, but the situation still comes across.

I was in the post office in Williamsburg in New York waiting to post a massive parcel. This guy behind me had the loudest and most interesting and self obsessed conversation on the phone. The rest of us were struggling to hear our own thoughts over his voice.

I now know that he was born in the Green Point Hospital up the road (which according to him is no longer there) so therefor feels that this is his neighbourhood and disagrees strongly with bitches behind counter doing whatever they want. He is renting out an art space to someone and is about to open a gallery combined with a skate shop. But that is all very hush-hush so he can really tell his friend that here over the phone. He also enjoys selling things on eBay and his has had a bit of a busy time lately as his grandmother has been very ill in hospital, but she is OK now, which we are all very relieved to hear.

But as he told his friend on the phone, he didn't want to talk too much as he didn't want all the freaks around him to hear what he was saying. Fair point. You never know who will write about you on the internet.

This is another memorable moment from Unit K. I was actually going to tell my friend Gaëlle that I had finally plucked up the courage to sign up for a dating site called the Pink Sofa. (Which turned out to be a very good idea as I ended up meeting my partner Jacqui..) But true to form, as I told her that I had done something drastic, Gaëlle came back with a quick (and probably equally drastic) suggestion.

The other day me and Jacqui went for a walk in a rainy Hackney with our friend Tim. He told us about a plum tree near his house that was full of fruit hanging over the fence from a school yard. We couldn't leave it alone when we saw it so we picked up a ladder from Tim's house and got to work. We picked 6 kilos all together just from the small part of the tree that you can reach from the street. If only I could get in to that yard I could start a small jam factory!

We thought it would be such a great idea to make a website that tells you were to find 'free fruit trees' that grow in public spaces. And then I found Fruit City which is doing exactly that! They have an excellent map that you can add your discoveries to and use it to plan your scrumping outings with more precision!

Our plums turned our Sunday into a jam and chutney making frenzy and I made some labels for the jars. The jam and chutney turned out pretty tasty and this is the result.

MY OLD DESK

I spent most of my time in school drawing doodles and little people on pretty much everything that happened to be in front of me. My math books were full of drawings and not much math. And they kept creeping up over my desk as well. I tend to try and restrain myself these days from drawing on furniture, but I found this slightly blurred photo of my desk from my previous house, which I obviously could not keep my self from doodling on. I just like how it becomes part of the surface and the randomness of the drawings. They might not be great illustrations but they are little comments on that moment in time. I particularly like the woman with the skirt that has an airplane printed on it. There are little parachuters jumping from the airplane-skirt.

You can't really read the writing but one of the little creatures says; 'It all went a bit wrong. Time for bed Children' which sums up the whole drawing really.

She also collects replica miniature tanks. She is a really talented musician and also a great model for costumes. The drawing was too big for my scanner so this is photo of a section of the image.

I mainly work in black and white, but sometimes I get carried away and try to tackle some colour. These images are the result of some colour madness and one of my first attempts of using photoshop. I don't really use it for fancy editing, its more like a a virtual scissors and glue kit in my incapable hands.

This is a little illustration of how I used to tackle the concept of flirting. Its all about getting the right level of fear in your eyes and a firm grip on whatever stable surface is near.

This is a drawing from one of the first anti-war marches in 2002 before the war with Iraq started. This girl was standing behind a fence at the end of the demonstration shouting over and over. She was having her own demonstration. Her voice was hoarse from hours of shouting and her lips a crackled grey white shade. Her eyes were darting around all the people in the march. It was as if she would die the moment she stopped shouting. I had been walking for hours in the anti-war march but suddenly it seemed so small compared to the private demonstration of this little girl with desperate eyes.

We went to Glastonbury this year, which was great! We got to experience the bottomless mud-pits with relentless rain and the scorching desert-like state of both fields and minds. This is a drawing I made when I first moved to England nine years ago. I went to Wimbledon School of Art, and spent a lot of time strolling around the streets around Wimbledon Chase looking at foxes leaving bloody trails of chewed fur or the sidewalks and hedgehogs getting their snouts stuck in mcflurry cans as they were trying to get the last lick of ice-cream.

I find real conversations and events really interesting. Sometimes the mundane and everyday boring stuff is more exciting to draw a little comic from than an elaborate made up story. They don't always have to have a punch line or even an end.

I kept getting these strange phone calls, not like people selling stuff or asking me to take part in a survey, but from this guy who had the wrong number but refused to believe me. He kept calling insisting to speak to his friend and started getting almost angry when I was still just me the tenth time he called. I bet his friend had given him the wrong number just so he would stop calling him. This is one of the conversations, word for word.

This is the final drawing out of the 100 that I did for the project 'Hundred Days to Make Me a Better Person' that was produced by London Word Festival 2010. Its was really good discipline to do one drawing every day. Some of them I really like. And some of them are really a bit terrible. But I did them all. One of them ended up in the Independent on Sunday. It all ended with an exhibition in Dalston with a performance by project initator and comedienne Josie Long and other participants. It was a great project to take part in and even better to see all the things that every one else have been up to.

My dad is a musician (my mum is too) and he 'discovered' the Euphonium a few years ago. Its quite loud. But then he used to play the trombone which is rather loud too. Me and my sister would get woken up in the morning by cheerful fanfares. It was very effective. One of my dads trombone colleagues once had a student who primarily used his trombone to scare small birds and insects on the island he lived on.

I love all things craft. I learned to knit as a teenager and made a humongous fluorescent-ish orange jumper that might still be in my parents house somewhere. I crocheted a dress that I wore for the millenium new years eve. One financially challenged year I made everyone sock puppets for christmas out of the socks from the lonely sock bag. My currant favorite is cross stitch as it is a great mix of creative freedom and systematic control.

My mum used to fast every year. It was always hilarious watching her face as she was trying to drink a big glass of sauerkraut juice and other terrible fluids. There is a photo from each year of this event. I recently tried the fasting myself and its not totally easy. After a few days of strange juices and teas you feel slightly lightheaded and strangely excited about vegetable stock. You are also prune to arguments about how many deciliters of potato water you are allowed in the morning. As potato water is a raw sliced up potato soaked in cold water that you drink the next day, discarding the potato and adding a teaspoon of lemon juice, the argument is normally revolving how FEW rather than many deciliters you have to drink.

I go swimming as often as I can. I am lucky to live close to the London Fields Lido, which is the best outdoor London pool ever. We go in the morning before work and pretend we are hard core like the rest of the nutcases who swim outdoors all year round.

Before that I used to go to various gyms to swim and it was always a gamble if you would be able to complete any laps without someone deciding to practice headstands in the middle of the lane. And then war would break out. Swimming pool wars are vicious, calculated and fought under the surface. There is the gentle nudge as you swim past someone. There is the frontal face-kick and the breast-stroke hip-slap. Who said swimming was a gentle and relaxing past-time?

I've never given blood. We used to have a 'Blood Bus' parked every monday on the town square when I was growing up and i was quite excited about giving blood. I think they even used to pay people a little to do it, so there were always lots of students hanging around. When I turned 18 there were two things I wanted to do, get a piercing and give blood. I got my piercing and went to the blood bus. And was declined because I had a piercing.

A colleague once gave me a leaf from a plant he had brought back from holiday. It's one of the most resilient plants I have. You can just put a leaf on top of some soil and it will plant itself and grow like some crazy thing. I've even had leaves fall off the plant and grow a new plant on the floor with no soil at all. Its a little bit like the day of the Triffids.

Is there anyone out there who can explain the psychology behind the 'lost sock trauma'? I'm sure I am not the only one who is pairing up socks obsessively and still never seem to manage to have all of them come back once they've been let loose inside a washing machine. It is common knowledge that there is some kind of dark force at work, but what exactly, can it be? Do they just disintegrate and disappear? Do they fester for years in an unknown part of your house only to come back when you are old and frail to take control of your life?

I have a bag which is dedicated only to lonely sock. Its a bit like a very local version of a dating site. I keep the lonely socks in the bag, and whenever another lonely sock appears I try to match them up with one of the first ones. Sometimes you have to use your imagination and let them pair up based on personality rather then looks. they will be happier together that way. But were the actual lost socks are, I think I will never know.

Bringing stuff to hospitalised friends can be tricky. Forget the cuddly toys. A bunch of grapes will do fine. They are a good reminder that they are actually in hospital. Don't spoil them too much. And its a great way to sort out constipation.

This one was published in The Independent newspaper on the 7th of March 2010. I was really happy and surprised when they called me up to ask if they could publish my drawing as part of an article about the project. I had to do a mini-tiny interview over the phone. I was on the platform at Hackney Wick with freight trains going past like small thunderstorms every two minutes, so I am sure the journalist enjoyed our conversation.

My friends got married and I were going with one of them to check out some shoes. Its not easy to pick shoes for a wedding. When my sister got married she came over to London as I was making her dress. I took her round every single shoe shop in town and she reluctantly tried on about a million pairs. A few weeks later she sent me an email with a picture of the pair she finally choose. She had found them in the Swedish equivalent of Tesco's. They were great. And about 3 quid. So much for all the designer shops in London.

When I did this drawing Brian Haw was still sitting on his almost 10 year long protest outside the parliament. He recently sadly passed away but there are still people trying to keep the Parliament Square Protest alive.

Yes, it is another one on the Swan Series. We need to look after our city swans. They provide us with entertainment, something to rest our eyes on and they take up space in the canals that would otherwise be filled with trolleys.

Our friends at the HM Revenue and Customs are always happy help. Sometimes a little bit too happy. However I once spoke to a very helpful man in the Scotland who managed to help me when the tax people accidently put £4000 in my bank account and then wanted to charge me a penalty fee for it when they took it back. So thank you, Scottish Tax Man for being so vigilant and helpful.
